In case you missed it, the new Skate game, simply known as Skate, but arguably better known as Skate 4, has been majorly popular among returning fans and new rippers alike. With a wealth of new players taking to San Vansterdam to showcase their skills, rack up serious multipliers, and own every spot in this already vast cityscape.
Thanks to the accessible format and free-to-play approach, more folks than ever are riding on four wheels, or perhaps two if they have a penchant for a techy manual. But, there are still some points of confusion that might throw you off and lead to some less than steezy bails.
One of which is how the heck the player can acquire Rip Chips and increase their Rip Score. One is much easier than the other at the time of writing, as the game still exists in Early Access. But, regardless, we will give you the skinny so you can grind your way to 100% completion.
What’s The Difference Between Rip Chips & Rip Score?
In Skate, you have two currencies that will be front and center as you aim to progress through the ranks. One is your Rip Chip count, and the other is your Rip Score.
The easiest way to differentiate the two is that Rip Chips are essentially the currency within the game that allows you to buy anything that doesn’t require you to break out your real-world wallet. Whereas your Rip score is more similar to an XP count that charts your progress as you become more proficient as a skater and more well-known and revered within the community.
You can use Rip Chips to purchase random items from the various bundles you unlock from progressing your status in each district of San Van, whereas your Rip Score can’t be used per-se, but at regular intervals, you will be rewarded for increasing your Rip Score by X amount with a new banner and a new title.
How To Earn Rip Chips
Unlike Rip Score, Rip Chips are consistently easy to come by, as they can be earned through being active, completing missions, playing with friends, completing missions and more. Here is a full rundown of all the ways that you can earn Rip Chips:
Completing Missions
Firstly, the player can earn Rip Chips in Skate by completing the story missions that exist within the game to this point. This is essentially an extended tutorial as Vee, Shingo, Slappy and others guide you through the various mechanics the game has to offer, showcase some prime spots to shred, and teach you some advanced moves to help you ace those pro challenges.
These missions are limited, as only three regions of the map are finished at the time of writing, but they will help you raise your reputation in each region of the map and unlock new content that allows you to earn more rip chips consistently.
These missions are a little buggy and temperamental. So, if they don’t progress, the best thing to do is quit the game and hop back in, as this usually fixes the issue.
Completing Challenges
The most consistent way to earn Rip Chips is, rather unsurprisingly, by skating and completing objectives. These challenges appear on your map and recycle daily, allowing you to consistently complete them and earn rewards. You will need to focus on completing missions first to unlock these objectives, but before long, you’ll have access to the majority of each region’s challenges on a daily basis.
These challenges offer an increase in your reputation in the region of the map the challenge takes place, and will also grant you a certain amount of Rip Chips depending on how many of the goals in each challenge you can tick off.
If you want to earn an extra handful of Rip Chips for completing all goals on any challenge, you should party up with another skater and complete these challenges in co-op.
Unlocking Fast Travel Spots
While this will offer limited returns due to the finite number of travel spots at this moment in time, you will be able to unlock fast travel locations around the map by leveling up your reputation in each of the districts in San Van.
If you do this, they will become greyed-out icons on the map, and if you seek them out and activate them manually, you will get some paltry rewards for your effort. But, alongside the ease of getting around, these rewards are worth getting as it’s a very low effort win.
Completing Daily and Weekly Tasks
Challenges will always be your bread and butter when it comes to earning Rip Chips, but there is a way to earn a bundle of them every day, with an additional trove of them up for grabs every week. But, it’s not very well signposted to say the least.
In your menu, where you access missions, you will also see a tab marked as ‘tasks’. This is where you be able to see passive challenges that you can complete by just skating around, or you can kill two birds with one stone and focus on them while doing challenges.
You’ll automatically gain the Rip Chips from the passive objectives if you happen to tick them off through natural play, but you need to manually go into the menu to claim the 250x daily Rip Chip and 1000x weekly Rip Chip reward, respectively. So, don’t forget to do this regularly to get a hearty bundle of chips.
How To Earn Rip Score
Rip Score is a little different from Rip Chips, as it’s essentially a sign of progression through the game’s content. But the issue at the time of writing is that the game doesn’t have all its content yet. So, you’ll find that eventually, you’ll hit a wall when it comes to Rip Score progression. However, so that you know, here are all the ways you can earn Rip Score:
Completing Missions
Much like Rip Chips, you can earn Rip Score by working your way through the game’s campaign content. If you do this and reach the end of what is available at this time, you should be sitting on about 4000-4500 Rip Score, depending on the items that you pulled in the store, and how many side missions related to co-op content you have been able to complete.
Purchasing Items
The only other way that you can earn Rip Score other than playing through mission content in Skate is by purchasing items in the in-game store. A nefarious way to keep all of us early adopters on the hook if we ever want to 100% the game.
Alongside the item you get, and the reputation you gain in the region tied to the item drop in question, you will also gain some Rip Score for any item gained. This amount is directly linked to the rarity of the item that you earn with a maximum of 50x Rip Score being on offer for golden items.

Pay To Win
Then lastly, while I would never encourage someone to do this, as its not something I agree with. Not to mention that it would cost an absolute bomb. But, if you really want to, you can pay for items within the shop with real cash to earn Rip Score.
From what I can gather, Rip Score is still calculated the same way, no matter whether you spend San Van Bucks or Rip Chips. So, you can use real cash to buy items in the store and bolster your Rip Score further than you ever could through natural play.
