While you obtain a Silk Heart very early on in your Hollow Knight: Silksong adventure, by the time you’ve made some serious progress, you will almost certainly have forgotten all about it. But this is a seriously important item, and the only reason you’re able to regenerate silk over time.
You will obtain 2 Silk Hearts simply by playing through the regular story of the game, but the third is very well hidden, only obtainable by fighting an optional boss in a pretty obscure area of the Citadel.
If you want to get that pesky achievement and complete the game 100%, you’re going to have to collect every single Silk Heart. Let me show you exactly how to get these hearts, and you’ll never have to worry about running out of silk again.
Silk Heart #1
If you were wondering what the Silk Heart actually is, it’s that little golden orb that drops from certain bosses, leading you into a silken memory. Once you obtain it, you’ll naturally regenerate 1 silk per heart, meaning you’ll always be able to use abilities like the Harpoon.
The first heart you obtain is the one from the Bell Beast in the Marrow. Once you’ve obtained the Silkspear skill from Mosshome, you can take on this boss.
Once she’s been defeated, you can grab the little floating ball of light, complete the mini-platforming section and claim the Silk Heart for yourself.
Silk Heart #2
The next Silk Heart that you’ll likely find is the one from beating Lace, but this time in the Cradle. You’ll face Lace after collecting the 3 melodies and entering the lift in the old Cogwork Dancers chamber.
This boss is a bit trickier than the first, but if you’ve explored enough and grabbed the 3 nail upgrades, you won’t have much trouble with her. Just watch out for Lace’s deflections, and you’ll have her down in no time. Once she’s been defeated, again complete the little platforming section and claim your 2nd silk heart.
Silk Heart #3
Surgeon’s Key
While this may be the second heart that people find, for me, it wasn’t until I had already gone through Whiteward that I realised there were more secrets to be found.
Firstly, you’ll need the Surgeon’s Key. Head to the long horizontal room with the 3 Morticians (The flat enemies with scissors that charge at you). Head all the way to the right and then jump up to the next room above.
Instead of going left or right, jump up into the shaft of light. Head through this passageway and then go left at the top. At the far left of this room, smash the debris blocking the way and then, in the next chamber, use your Clawline Harpoon to pull the ring that hangs down from above. A corpse will drop that’s holding the Surgeon’s Key.
The Unravelled – Phase 1
Return to the other long corridor in the southwest of Whiteward, left of the main elevator and find the circular slot for the Surgeon’s Key. Insert the Key and then jump down into the hole to begin the arena fight.
Before the actual boss spawns, you’ll have to take on a couple of enemies. Try to remember their attack patterns, as you’ll have to take on a few more of these as the fight progresses. Once they’re down, the Unravelled will spawn and begin its assault.
While not essential, the faydown cloak helps a lot for this fight, as you’ll be jumping around a lot.

Description |
How To Avoid |
|---|---|---|
|
Silk Charge |
The Unravelled will emerge from the ground, on the left or right and charge across the arena. |
Simply jump over the top of him to avoid, and slash his back before he disappears. |
|
Corpse Shot |
Next, he will emerge once more but stay in place, firing off 2 bodies towards you. |
Generally, he will fire 1 body high and the other low, so stay on the ground for the first, and jump over the second. |
The Unravelled – Phase 2
This boss may only have 2 attacks to deal with at the beginning, but it will soon become a little more hectic.
After the first phase change, he will summon a couple of extra enemies. These will spin around in the air and target you relentlessly. Try to hit them from underneath to juggle them in the air, or simply jump over them and hit them from behind.
Once the boss reappears, you’ll have a new threat to deal with. Now, spears will shoot up from the ground, indicated by a plume of silk. These will hang in the air and fall towards the ground.
While these spears are pretty slow, when the boss is above ground, it can all get a bit crazy. Just focus on dodging and getting the occasional hit in while you have the chance.
While you may not be able to attack from above, because of the golden helmet, this boss is massively susceptible to ground tools such as tacks. Add the Pollip Pouch for some extra damage.
In addition, The Unravelled’s Corpse Shot attack will gain an extra body, spitting out 3 instead of 2. The only new attack you need to look out for is as follows:

Spear Summoning |
The Unravelled will appear in the centre of the arena and summon two spears on either side, which converge in the centre. |
Hit him in the middle a couple of times, and then dash to the sides to avoid being caught. |
There is a 3rd stage to this fight, but in honesty, it’s simply more of the same. Take out the extra spawns and rinse and repeat until he goes down. Make your way through the memory platforming section and claim your third and final Silk Heart
Weavelight
There is a way to get a Pseudo 4th Silk Heart by equipping the Weavelight item. This will increase the rate at which your silks regenerate, while giving you a 4th piece of silk. This means you’ll always be able to use your silk skills, even if you cannot quite manage to hit your enemy.
This is a blue tool which is found in Weavenest Atla. Head to the far left of the mossy area and take out the Dual Moss Mothers. You’ll be rewarded with this powerful tool.
